SUSTAINABLE FLORISTRY

Australian grown (not flown!) flowers

You may be surprised that traditional florists and supermarket flowers rely heavily on chemically treated, imported flowers which carry enormous carbon miles and generate significant waste from single use plastic packaging. We do not use any imported flowers, ever. We source all of our flowers from Australian farms, mostly in Queensland and northern NSW. We’re proud to support our hard-working farmers.

Sustainable Packaging

We use recycled, biodegradable and compostable packaging materials to present our arrangements, and we are continuously experimenting with new sustainable products as they come onto the market.

Our paper wraps, hydration packs, gift cards, jute string and branding stickers are all made from natural and / or recycled materials that can be further recycled or composted. As for our gorgeous ribbons - we encourage you to reuse them in your own gift wrapping!

Building Habitat for Wildlife

We are proud to contribute to habitat regeneration for local wildlife through our sustainable and regenerative flower growing practices. Our small farm is a thriving ecosystem supporting native birds, animals, bees and beneficial insect life. We compost all of our green waste on our flower farm, which directly feeds next season's flower crops!

Solar Powered Studio

Our flower fridges, studio lighting and trusty coffee machine are powered by our glorious Queensland sun.

Plastic-Free and Foam-Free

Commercially sold flowers are traditionally packaged in single use plastic sleeves which are disposed of by the florist as soon as the flowers arrive at the store. This generates enormous unnecessary waste that heads straight to landfill. Yuck.

Floral foam or “Oasis” is traditionally used to hold flowers in place in a vessel arrangement, but is actually toxic to human and animal life, and can’t be recycled. It breaks down into microplastics that contaminate our waterways, harm our marine life, and remain in the environment for hundreds of years.

At Vase Life we do not use plastic or floral foam products. There are safe, more sustainable alternatives to both, which we use routinely in our own practice and advocate to our colleagues within our industry.
